One of the unexpected joys of The Champlain Valley here in Vermont is Cruisin' 93.7 out of Addison. This little 21,000 watt station doesn't have many commercials. The station is too weak and the market too small for one of the radio behemoths like Clear Channel Communications to want to take it over, standardize the playlist with their 1000 other stations, and pasteurize and homogenize the music for some advertising demographic.
So, 93.7 has this magnificent music library and and they seem to play what they want, more or less, when they want.

I discovered Cruisin' 93.7 when I took Charlotte up to Halford Motors in Georgia, Vermont. Now Halford Motors is actually an immaculate 2 bay garage behind Luke Halford's home on Sandy Birch Road in Georgia, one exit up I-89 from our Champlain Islands' Exit. Charlotte was making strange noises when I turned her steering wheel left or right. Luke put Charlotte up on his lift. First he admired the underside condition of Charlotte and how much of the original equipment was still on her after twenty years.

I could get $2500 for this car up here.
Who knew?
He knew what he was talking about and he is one helluva mechanic. Within minutes he found the leaking power steering hose. He found a new hose up in St. Alban's and while we waited the hour for it to be delivered we shot the shit. For a decade he had been a tech and then the service writer for the Saturn dealership up here. His wife sold Saturns out front. And Saturns were, and still are, very popular up here in Vermont. Then GM pulled the plug on Saturn. His wife went to manage a credit union and he broke out on his own.
Didn't your neighbors mind your building the garage and all the cars.
I fix all their cars. And the cars I buy and fix up I usually sell to them or somebody they know.
When the hose was delivered (by a neighbor) Luke showed me to his waiting room. It was a little bigger than a closet but immaculate like everything about the garage. There were two chairs, a little table and a soundless TV playing. A sign offered FREE WIFI: PASSWORD: HANNAH12. I suppose you would expect all of those in a waiting room. What you don't expect is a waiting room as memorial to the owner's Heavy Metal rock days.

Only after I had marveled at the collectibles and
memorabilia did I become aware of the music coming from the garage proper. What an off-the-wall mix of music. Certainly not predominately heavy metal. But then, Luke was in his 30's now with wife, little daughter Hannah, a home and a business to run. I listened and enjoyed for the less than an hour that it took Luke to cut the old hose out and put the new hose in. I paid him ($151) and
forgot to ask about the station. On the ride home I scanned up and down Charlotte's radio dial, frequency by frequency, listening to each possible station. I listened for two songs which were totally incongruous in vintage, style, whatever. Finally I found it --Cruisin' 93.7.
Next time Fran and I were in the car together I tuned to the station and told her about my discovery. After the first two songs she was seriously underwhelmed and I began to worry about how far apart we had grown. Then they played Jan and Dean's
Little Old Lady from Pasadena. Ever since then we'll be riding along listening to a song and then the next song will start up and she'll turn to me and smile.
Where else can you hear Fats Domino followed by Steely Dan?
Or The Beach Boys (
Good Vibrations) followed by Dion (
The Wanderer) followed by the Left Banke (
Just Walk Away Renee) followed by The Beatles (
Baby You're a Rich Man).

Afternote: I went back to Halford Motors to see Luke and get a couple of additional pics. That is why I have the Beach Boy ticket photo. He had gone to New Hampshire to see them last weekend. Coincidentally, The New York Times had, the past Sunday, run an article about the song Be My Baby by the Ronettes and produced by a very young Phil Spector. The article begins:
Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys estimates that he’s heard “Be My Baby,” by the Ronettes, more than 1,000 times. The very first listen, 50 years ago this month, still haunts him.
“I was driving and I had to pull over to the side of the road — it blew my mind,” Mr. Wilson said, repeating a story that has become something of a legend. “It was a shock.” Just 21 and already frustrated with his band’s basic surf music, he bought the single and set about deconstructing its arrangement and production.
“I started analyzing all the guitars, pianos, bass, drums and percussion,” he said by telephone. “Once I got all those learned, I knew how to produce records.”
“I felt like I wanted to try to do something as good as that song and I never did,” he said. “I’ve stopped trying.” Mr. Wilson added: “It’s the greatest record ever produced. No one will ever top that one.”
I related the story to Luke. His response:
